Who we support

This service is designed for NDIS participants aged 16 and over who want counselling support that is practical, person-centred, and aligned with their plan goals. Participants we work with often experience:

  • Anxiety, stress, or emotional overwhelm
  • Trauma-related responses affecting daily function
  • Neurodivergence (Autism, ADHD, AuDHD) and related support needs
  • Grief, loss, and major life transitions
  • Identity changes and emotional burnout
  • Difficulty with transitions, change, or routine
  • Challenges with confidence, communication, or social participation
  • Emotional regulation difficulties that affect day-to-day life

Our approach is trauma-informed, neuro-affirming, and somatic-informed where appropriate. It is shaped around what matters most to the participant. We focus on function, choice, and safety.

Delivery: Sessions are available online Australia-wide and in-person on the Gold Coast.

What counselling can support

Sessions are tailored to each participant and linked to goals in their NDIS plan. Counselling may support:

  • Emotional regulation and distress tolerance
  • Coping strategies for stress, sensory load, or burnout
  • Confidence and self-understanding
  • Managing transitions (work, study, housing, relationships, identity)
  • Participation in daily routines and community life
  • Communication, boundaries, and relational skills
  • Capacity building through consistent, goal-based sessions

We prioritise practical outcomes that show up in a participant’s real life, not generalised wellbeing claims.

How this service aligns with the NDIS

Counselling at Jala Yoga & Counselling is delivered in line with current NDIS expectations for participant choice, goal-based support, and clear documentation.

What this looks like in practice

  • Service agreements are provided before sessions begin
  • Goals are linked to the participant’s NDIS plan
  • Session notes and progress summaries are kept for each participant
  • Reviews are scheduled so support stays relevant and defensible
  • Referral pathways are used when a need falls outside scope

We support Self-managed, Plan-managed, and Agency-managed participants. Funding suitability is confirmed during intake so expectations are clear from the start.

Where yoga-informed practices fit

Yoga-informed strategies may be drawn on only where they are clinically relevant and consistent with a participant’s NDIS goals. Examples include body-based grounding, breath regulation, or interoception work that directly supports a documented goal such as emotional regulation or distress tolerance.

This is different from attending a general yoga class. General yoga and wellbeing classes are not claimed under NDIS through this service. Where yoga is a better fit outside NDIS, we can point you to those options separately.

What to expect

The process is structured and easy to follow:

  1. Enquiry or referral — You contact us, or a support coordinator refers
  2. Intake and goal setting — We map goals to the NDIS plan
  3. Service agreement — Scope, cost, and expectations are confirmed in writing
  4. Tailored sessions — Counselling sessions are shaped to the participant’s pace and goals
  5. Review — Progress is reviewed regularly and adjusted as needed
  6. Summaries or handover — Provided where appropriate to support continuity

Families, support coordinators, and plan managers are welcome in the process when the participant consents.

Safety, scope, and safeguarding

We deliver counselling within scope of practice and in line with current NDIS expectations for integrity, evidence, and safeguarding.

Important to know

  • We are not an after-hours or crisis service
  • Participants needing urgent support should contact emergency services (000) or Lifeline (13 11 14)
  • We operate under professional counselling ethics, privacy standards, and consent processes
  • If a support need falls outside our scope, we will refer appropriately
