over the past 2 years, local legends have been gathering together, practicing yoga + then cleaning the beach and headland.
we then sort the trash, count it and report to tangaroa blue, a national database scheme which focuses on noticing trends and helps us then implement solutions.
at the most recent clean, in a space of 25 minutes, we collected :
1883 cigarette butts
130 plastic bottle lids
5 take away cups
80 assorted hard plastic items
38 plastic bread ties
7 plastic bags
7 pieces of styrofoam
506 pieces of assorted soft plastic
594 aluminium bottle top lids
89 plastic food wrappers
21 hair ties
9 glass bottles
5 sushi soy sauce fish
11 coffee cups
74 plastic straws and take away cutlery
129 pieces of paper
15 aluminium beer cans
79 plastic drink bottles
10 zip ties
plus so many more small things
these figures are devastating, but on the flip side a) we cleaned it and sorted it into trash and recycling and b) THEY CAN ALL BE AVOIDED!
the plan :
